Barton Reading & Spelling System

What is it?

This system is an Orton-Gillingham inspired program that is backed by research and proven effective for children with difficulties learning the intricacies of literacy.

Who is it for?

This program was designed for people with dyslexia, but can be more broadly applied to most learning difficulties and disabilities. A screener test is given in order to test your child's skill level and eligibility for testing. If the screener is too challenging, these skills will be introduced and mastered before starting the program.

What is it?

The Barton Reading and Spelling System initially works through learning the foundational skills of knowing letters and their sounds, breaking words down into sounds, and teaching "tricks" for easily mixed-up letter sounds. It then progresses to assigning concrete rules to different concepts to allow the child to develop the necessary skills to engage in independent literacy tasks. Reading and spelling lessons are completed on several levels: first at the word level with a visual aid, then at the word level without the visual aid, then progresses to phrases, sentences, and stories. As the program progresses, more complex attributes of reading and writing are targeted.

What is an example of a rule?

One of the first rules taught is how to spell the "k" sound in the beginning of the word. by using a mnemonic that gives the context in which you use either "c" or "k". All rules are phrased like hints or clues as to how the rule is applied to make the concept easier to remember. As one rule is learned, it is incorporated into future lessons.

What else is covered in this program?

Sight words and vocabulary are also incorporated into these lessons. Additionally, homework is often included, as well as instruction for the parents for continued and consistency efforts at home. Additionally, common core standards are incorporated into lessons.
